Ah, technology. Our loyal companion in the age of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. The stage, where the stories of complex characters and gas-guzzling monster trucks, come to life. A stage where I am convinced that my Smart TV particular, has an impeccable knack for drama. Where every pixel gears up for the grand entry just when the movie reaches its climax. What better moment to throw an impromptu software update party, right?

Picture this: A bleak Sunday afternoon, popcorn in hand, anxiety mounting, as the illustrious Detective MacTavish chases the elusive villain through the misty streets of London Town. Engines are roaring, tyres are screeching, the dramatic background music reaching a crescendo…and then BAM! My Smart TV springs to life like a toddler overdosed on sugar, grabbing my attention. In the heart-throbbing moment of the anticipated vehicle leap over towering flames, it politely enquires whether I would like to commence a software update.

The audacity!

“Yes,” it asks, “would you like to proceed to version ‘Please Wait Forever’?” As if the title didn’t scream, “Hey, I’m about to torment you more than the thought of Monday mornings.”

But of course, I understand. It’s just a machine doing its duties. Might as well ask your toaster, mid-toast, to acknowledge a mechanical repair. Or perhaps, while you’re on your way to land the Mom of the Year award, your minivan can just stop in the middle of the freeway for an oil check. As they say, “there is a time and place for everything,” right?

Hah! Surprise! Technology doesn’t really abide by that adage.

Now, some tech apologists might argue that I could have opted for a ‘later’ button or set the updates to auto, but where’s the fun in that? I mean, the thrill of never knowing when my Smart TV will decide to strike again is exhilarating, comparable only to riding a roller coaster with a loose seatbelt.

Getting back to Detective MacTavish’s story fraught in suspense, I daringly venture down the update rabbit hole. As my TV screens kicks off an episode of “Updating: Season 78, Episode 43,” I’m left with an option to either engage in a riveting showdown with my half-made bowl of popcorn or take a power nap. Believe me, in this situation, even counting your ceiling tiles seems to be a healthier alternative than staring at the never-ending swirling circle on the screen.

In reality, I find solace in thinking of these mid-breakdown software updates as our Smart TVs way of connecting with us. Trying to remind us what life was like before streaming services – when we had to sit through hours of commercials, praying our show would be back on sooner rather than later. Indeed, it’s an endearing throwback, our TVs way of saying, “Hey, I’m old school too.”

So next time you find yourself pulsating with anticipation as the car chase is getting good and your TV throws a software update tantrum, remember this: at least it has the decency to ask if you want to “Please Wait Forever.” Which is more than can be said about any commercial break.

Sarcasm and irony aside, Smart TVs are a perfect example of how technology is a double-edged sword. Incorporating software updates into our lifestyle is a necessary evil if we want to continually enjoy the perks of a smart and connected life. But hey, next time, maybe they could opt for a less nail-biting moment, huh? For now, I’ll continue relishing my plot-twisting software updates. After all, ‘Please Wait Forever’ is the new ‘happily ever after’.

How does your Smart TV choose its update moments?
