That larger amount is probably a temporary card hold, not the price of your gas. When you pay at the pump, the station may ask your card issuer to set aside money before it knows how much you’re going to pump. Apparently the pump can authorize a purchase before it knows what the purchase is. The inconvenience is yours.

Check your banking app and your gas receipt. If the larger amount says Pending and the receipt shows what you actually spent, the transaction may still be settling. The final charge should reflect the gas you bought. Depending on your card and issuer, the original hold may disappear or briefly appear alongside the final charge.

A pending hold is not the same as a completed charge, but it can still cause a real problem. On a debit card, that money may be unavailable while the hold remains. On a credit card, it may reduce your available credit. Neither is especially comforting when you only stopped for gas.

If the larger amount is still pending, ask your card issuer when it expects the hold to clear. The station may have started the hold, but your issuer can tell you what’s happening on your account. Keep the receipt so you have the actual purchase amount handy.

If the larger amount posts as a completed charge, or the final gas purchase and the larger amount both post, don’t assume it’s just a hold. Contact the station and your card issuer, and ask about disputing the incorrect charge if it isn’t fixed.

For now, the useful distinction is pending versus posted. Check that before accusing the pump of charging you for gas you didn’t buy. It may only be borrowing room on your card without having the decency to explain itself.
