The Retail Revolution That Could Woo Me Back to the Aisles

Let’s just get it straight from the outset – I have comfortably thrown my lot in with the web shopping revolution, it’s Amazon for me, Versace or Valentino, groceries or gadgets, add to cart – and boom, it’s at my doorstep the next day or two. But, recently, a trip to my local Sam’s Club opened my eyes to a retail model that – shockingly – made me contemplate a return to the bricks-and-mortar stores I’d abandoned in favor of one-click ordering and Prime delivery.

Yeah, you read that right. I, a pragmatic online shopper, am considering a step backwards into the physical world of retail. Why, you may ask? Imagine this: walk into the store, shop with an app, scan the item, pay, and walk out the door – no lines, no fuss, no BS. It’s the tactile satisfaction of brick-and-mortar shopping twinned with the convenience and efficiency of online retail.

As an ardent Amazon shopper, I found this to be a pleasantly surprising experience at Sam’s Club. Not only could I touch, feel, and decide at the store but without the menacing checkout lines – a pleasure often stripped away by moody self-checkout machines. I took my time, selected purchase, scanned, paid through the app, and off I went, leaving behind the dread of standing in socially-distanced queues.

I know, I know, there are possibly many more stores doing the same, but because of my steadfast loyalty to Amazon, I’ve been blissfully ignorant. If places like Target and even (gulp!) Walmart, which let me say right now, most certainly does not top my list of favorite retail spaces, offered this kind of hybrid experience, maybe – just maybe – I would step into their fluorescent-lit territory.

Rumor has it, Sam’s Club is a Walmart offspring, but don’t let my admittedly prejudiced opinion of Walmart taint this innovative retail model. Look, I’ve got a serious bone to pick with them, but that’s a rant for another day. However, if this is how they’re reshaping the retail landscape, well then credit where it’s due – nicely played, corporate overlords.

In the grand debate of brick-and-mortar vs. online shopping, I now find myself in the middle of a previously unimaginable tug of war. I mean, I really don’t mind going into the store if it beats having to deal with crashing self-checkout services and brings the ease of online shopping right to my palm.

Let’s be clear, turning back the clock and returning to the chaos of traditional brick and mortar isn’t going to happen. But if more businesses can merge the benefits of physical and virtual shopping into this seamless and efficient model, then sign me up for the retail revolution 2.0.

As of now, it’s still Amazon for me, the melody of the delivery truck is my siren’s song. But could the call of the scanner and the swish of walking right out of the store without queuing up be the next big thing? The retail world should be on alert – you’ve got my attention now. Make it good.
