Google has added hundreds of textbooks to Gemini Notebook at no charge. That could be genuinely useful if you’re trying to understand a chapter. It is considerably less useful if the book your teacher assigned isn’t there.

Google announced the textbook catalog on October 29, 2026. It includes books from providers such as OpenStax, Open Textbook Library, and S Chand Publishing. The change isn’t that Gemini Notebook suddenly learned to make quizzes. It could already do that with material you added. Now you can pick from a catalog of books without finding and uploading one yourself.

To try it, open Gemini Notebook in your browser, create or open a notebook, and choose Add sources → Textbooks. Pick a title, then ask it to explain a section, make flashcards, or quiz you on a chapter. Its answers can include citations that take you back to the book. That last part matters. If an explanation sounds odd, you have somewhere to check it besides asking the AI, “Are you sure?” and hoping it develops a conscience.

Google says the included books cost nothing to add, and you don’t need a paid AI plan for standard access. You do need an eligible Google account in a supported country, and age requirements apply. The browser is the clearest place to try the catalog; features in the mobile apps can differ. School-managed accounts may have different access, so students shouldn’t assume the menu will appear just because a friend can see it.

Then there’s the word hundreds. It sounds like a lot until your course requires one particular title and edition. Check for the assigned book before building a study routine around this. And even when you find it, check questionable answers and quiz questions against the cited pages. A citation makes an answer easier to verify, not automatically right.

My take: this is a good addition, especially for someone who wants practice questions from an available textbook without doing all the setup first. It won’t replace the book your class actually uses. But if that book is in the catalog, making yourself a chapter quiz is a much better use of AI than asking it to do the homework and trusting whatever comes back.
