GPT-6.1 Terra Can Read Your Screens. It Can’t Just Take Over Your Computer.

OpenAI’s new model is available to eligible paid users in ChatGPT Work, not ordinary Chat. The computer-control part takes extra setup.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, and the part worth noticing isn’t its name. It’s meant to work with images and screens, which could be handy if you spend your day checking what’s on them.

Say you have a batch of product photos and a catalog. You could ask Terra to help match them. Or you could show it images of a page and ask whether text is cut off or badly placed. OpenAI says Terra is faster and more efficient at this kind of work. That’s the company’s claim, not a promise that it will spot every mistake.

Here’s the first catch: Terra isn’t a model you’ll find in an ordinary ChatGPT chat. OpenAI’s feature note places it in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users. On desktop, look under Advanced; on the web, look in Work. Work also supports it on mobile. Enterprise access may depend on an administrator.

There’s a small wrinkle with Business: the launch announcement leaves that plan off its list, while the more specific feature note includes it. If you have a Business account, check your model picker before assuming it’s there. Plus costs $20 a month, with usage limits. Using Terra through the API is billed separately, not thrown in with Plus.

The second catch is bigger. Being good at understanding a screenshot is not the same as being allowed to click around your computer. Selecting Terra does not switch on computer control. According to OpenAI’s Work documentation, Computer Use needs the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS or Windows, a plugin and the right app permissions. On Windows, it takes over the active desktop while it runs. That is worth knowing before you hand it a task and go make coffee.

Work on the web or mobile also can’t directly reach files sitting on your computer. And don’t assume desktop work stays entirely on your machine: messages or task context may be stored in the cloud. If you do enable computer actions, start with something small and reversible, then check what it did.

Terra looks worth trying if you already pay for access and regularly sort through images or work across apps. If your usual ChatGPT request is a dinner idea or help wording an email, this release alone probably isn’t a reason to subscribe. It’s a potentially useful tool for a particular kind of work, not a magic switch labeled “do my computer stuff.”
