Google Moved the Links Up. Its AI Answers Still Need Checking.

Google is making sources easier to find in AI Search results. That helps, but a visible link is not a fact-check.

Google has made it a little easier to see where its AI Search answers got their information. Good. Now comes the part where you still have to click the links.

On October 15, Google announced that it is placing links to source pages higher in its AI-generated Search responses more often. Those links already existed. What changed is how prominently Google shows them.

Google also says it will test a section near the top of some responses that points to useful official websites. That part is a test, not a feature everyone should expect to see. Separately, Google is expanding its carousels of timely articles to more locations and languages. Android Central also reported the changes.

Why care about link placement? Say you search for a service’s cancellation policy. The AI answer may give you a neat summary, but the page it links to is where you can check the actual terms before you cancel, pay a fee, or argue with somebody on the phone. Making that page easier to find is useful.

It does not mean Google checked the answer for you. An AI summary can misread a source or leave out the sentence that matters. For anything consequential, open the relevant link and check the page itself. If it’s a rule or policy, look for the official source rather than treating the summary as the final word.

These changes concern AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search, not a paid Gemini app feature. Google lists both Search experiences as available in the United States, and it has not stated a separate price or subscription requirement for the link changes. AI Overviews appear when Google decides they’re helpful; AI Mode lets you ask follow-up questions. Google has not said every person, search, device or location will show every change right away.

And if you’d rather skip AI Overviews and see text-based links, Google says you can choose the Web filter after searching.

My verdict: better-placed links are a sensible improvement, especially if they make it easier to get to the source that actually answers your question. Just don’t mistake a more convenient citation for a correct answer. The click still matters.
