The Self-Checkout Got One Item. Police Got the License Plate.
A reported shoplifting at a New Jersey Wawa included a stop at self-checkout. The transaction was unusually selective.

They paid for one item.
That’s the detail in this Wawa shoplifting report that makes me stop and read it again. Not zero items. One. The self-checkout got a brief appearance in the story, just long enough to handle a single purchase.
According to the Woodbury Police Department’s crime blotter, employees at a Wawa in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, reported that a man and woman put merchandise in a bag as they walked through the store on October 5, 2026. They paid for one item at self-checkout and left without paying for the rest, employees said.
What was the one item? The blotter doesn’t say. What else was in the bag? Also not specified. We have a self-checkout transaction with its most interesting detail withheld, which seems a little unfair to those of us now stuck thinking about it.
There’s something almost impressively narrow about stopping at the register and paying for exactly one thing. The machine did its job. It rang up what it was given. It had no reason to suspect it was getting the abbreviated version of the shopping trip.
The two had left before officers arrived. But employees gave police descriptions of both people and their vehicle, including its registration. That’s a fairly important detail to leave behind when the plan, whatever it was, involves leaving.
Police identified the driver as a West Deptford resident and reported that the driver was charged. The blotter doesn’t specify the charge. It says the passenger would be charged once identified, not that the passenger has since been identified or charged.
So the known facts stop there. No inventory of the bag, no price, no explanation for the lonely item that got paid for.
One item made it through checkout. The registration made it into the blotter.
