ChatGPT Can Now Give You Something to Adjust, Not Just an Answer

OpenAI is rolling out interactive answers, including to Free accounts. A bill splitter is useful, but you still need to check the math.

A dinner bill is a good test of this ChatGPT update. Four people ordered different things, somebody shared an appetizer, and now everyone is staring at the tax and tip. Instead of handing you one confident-looking number, ChatGPT may give you an interactive bill splitter where you can change the inputs and see the result change.

That’s the idea behind what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. Announced on October 7, 2026, it lets ChatGPT put visuals and adjustable controls inside some answers rather than always replying with a wall of text. OpenAI also gives examples such as a recipe you can adjust and a diagram you can explore. You don’t need a special command to ask for one, and ordinary text answers aren’t going away.

Try asking: “Split this dinner bill among four people. Here’s what each person ordered, the tax, and the tip. Give me a way to adjust the amounts.” If ChatGPT produces an interactive answer, change an order or the tip and inspect the revised split. That’s more useful than repeatedly typing, “Wait, make the tip 18 percent.”

The access details matter. According to OpenAI’s October 7 announcement and its release notes, the rollout began globally for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise accounts on October 7. Expansion to Free and Go accounts starts October 8. Starts is doing work there. It doesn’t mean every Free account has it already, and Enterprise access can depend on an administrator’s settings.

You don’t have to pay to try it once it reaches your Free account. Plus is $20 a month, but buying Plus solely for an adjustable dinner bill seems a bit much. OpenAI says there’s no separate Intelligent UI quota, though the usual plan and tool limits still apply. The feature is rolling out on the web and supported updated apps; older Mac and Windows desktop apps don’t support it. If you can’t find it in a desktop app, try the web. It also doesn’t work with the Pro reasoning option.

The catch is that a nicer way to display a calculation doesn’t make the calculation correct. Check that the items add up, that tax and tip are applied the way your group expects, and that nobody has been charged for an appetizer they never touched.

This is a sensible improvement when you need to change numbers or explore an answer. If it reaches your account, it’s worth trying. Just don’t let a polished little bill splitter become the fifth person at dinner who gets the math wrong.
