Gemini Is Taking Model Choices Away From Free Accounts
Starting October 9, Google says free personal accounts will be limited to Flash-Lite as the change rolls out. Before paying for an upgrade, check what your account actually has.

Google is taking two model choices away from people using Gemini for free. That sounds like a reason to get out your credit card. It might not be.
According to Google’s notice, the change begins taking effect October 9, 2026, for personal accounts without a Google AI subscription. Once it reaches your account, Flash-Lite will be the only model available on the free tier. Flash and Pro will no longer be choices.
Those names are Google’s way of offering different versions of Gemini for different amounts of work. Flash-Lite remains available for everyday things like brainstorming or summarizing. Google describes Flash and Pro as better suited to more demanding tasks. If you normally open Gemini, ask a straightforward question, and move on, you may not have much reason to care. If you deliberately switched to Flash or Pro for a harder question, you might.
Paying doesn’t restore every choice, either. Under the announced change, Google AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro. Google AI Pro and Ultra keep all three. In the U.S., Google lists AI Plus at $4.99 a month and AI Pro at $19.99 a month. Those are U.S. listed prices, not a promise about the price you’ll see elsewhere.
There’s an annoying wrinkle: this is a rollout, not proof that every account changes today. Google says Plus subscribers will get an email telling them when their change takes effect. And as of October 9, Google’s general Gemini limits page and subscription page still describe broader free access than its specific change notice does. The documentation apparently hasn’t finished having a conversation with itself. 9to5Google also reported the announced restriction on October 3, but neither report establishes what choices appear in your account right now.
So open Gemini and look at the model choices available to you before considering an upgrade. If Flash-Lite handles what you actually ask it to do, keep the $4.99. If a model you relied on disappears, at least you’ll know what you’d be paying to get back.
